I prefer to edit clean stories without excessive vulgarity and swearing, erotic scenes, or detailed blood and gore. This doesn’t mean that I won’t edit books that deal with difficult topics and messy situations. In fact, I welcome these ideas in books! If you aren’t sure whether your content is too graphic or not, feel free to reach out for a free sample edit.

Manuscript Evaluations
A manuscript evaluation provides a comprehensive review of your full manuscript, offering feedback on big-picture issues throughout the story such as plot, character, worldbuilding, and themes. The goal is to let you know where your book is at—what’s already working and what needs revision. This service includes the following:

-
At least one full read-through of your manuscript
-
A detailed editorial letter discussing the story’s strengths and weaknesses as well as offering suggestions for revision and next steps
This service is especially helpful for new authors or for those who would prefer a less in-depth developmental edit.

Developmental Edits

The first step in the editorial process is typically on the developmental level, which evaluates the story as a whole and solidifies the content of your story, such as the plot, character arcs, setting, and themes. A developmental edit includes the following:

-
At least two full read-throughs of your manuscript
-
A detailed editorial letter discussing the story’s strengths and weaknesses as well as offering suggestions for revision and next steps
-
Frequent comments throughout the text specifying where and how to make revisions
-
A line edit sample of a short passage

My developmental edits focus on explaining the root of each narrative issue and teaching story craft principles. Although I provide various ideas to solve whatever issues arise in each manuscript, I encourage my clients to also think of their own revision solutions based on a complete understanding of the underlying problems.
Substantive/Line Edits
After a book is developmentally sound, line edits address paragraph-level issues, such as improving sentence flow and strengthening narrative voices. By the end, your prose will be more engaging while maintaining your personal voice and style. This service includes the following:

-
At least two full read-throughs of your manuscript
-
Frequent in-line tracked changes showing each suggestion for improving your prose
-
Occasional comments to clarify edits or request your own revisions

When necessary, a heavier line edit may at times address more substantive issues such as missing scene beats or significantly reducing word count.

Copy Edits

Copy edits come near the end of the editing process when the manuscript is ready to be cleaned up. These in-line edits focus on the nitty-gritty details of grammar, usage, and punctuation, from capitalization of your title to the font of each quotation mark. Additionally, this thorough edit will establish continuity throughout your manuscript, such as consistency in dates, names, and other small details. This service includes the following:

-
At least two full read-throughs of your manuscript
-
Methodical, in-line tracked changes showing corrections and suggested adjustments
-
Occasional comments to clarify edits or request your decisions in settling continuity questions
-
A comprehensive style sheet listing important editorial decisions and continuity details for ease of reference

Depending on the genre, copy edits may also be negotiated to include fact checking. By the end of this round of editing, your manuscript should be ready for layout and design!
Combined Services
Because the nature of editing often allows elements from each level to cross over, I also offer combined services. To enable this service, the manuscript must require light rounds of two different edits, which I can then complete in the same round—saving you time and money. If your manuscript qualifies, we can settle on one of the following combinations:

-
A developmental and line edit
-
A line and copy edit

Proofreading

When a manuscript is laid out and designed, occasionally mistakes creep into the proofs, such as missing page numbers or awkward hyphenation. My proofreading services catch these last-minute corrections and other embarrassing typos before they go to print. This service includes the following:

-
At least one full read-through of the manuscript
-
Highlighted and explained changes on the PDF for the author or designer to implement
-
Attention to front matter and back matter as well as the main text

After a quick but thorough proofread, your manuscript will be ready for publishing!
Consultations
Writing and revising can be a messy and overwhelming process at times. Whether you need help deciding how to move forward with a project or want insights into how to navigate the editing process and publishing world, I can help! I am available for either phone calls or video chats to discuss your questions and concerns. Calls are typically scheduled for one hour at a time and may be negotiated as needed.

Referal Program

Much of my business comes through word-of-mouth referrals from previous clients, a service I’ll always be grateful for! To say thank you for thinking of me and your friends, I offer a special discount. If you recommend my services to another author and they follow through on hiring me for any of my services, they will receive 10% off their first editing service and you will also get 10% off your next editing service!
